YOU CAN SEE THAT THE MAIN TRAVEL LANES HERE, THE CENTER TRAVELING TO PEER TO JUST BE WET, MAY BE SOME SLICK SPOTS OUT AND YOU'LL ENCOUNTER SOME SLUSH, THOUGH, IN THOSE FAR LEFT OR RIGHT LANES AND THE TURNING LANES AS WELL. A pair of coronal mass ejections heading toward Earth could produce aurora farther south, but there are some question marks too. WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth and NASA ambassador Tony Rice discuss what to expect.

A meteorologist Amy Wout here with NASA ambassador Tony Rice. Thank you so much for joining us on what might be an exciting day. I say might because we don't know for sure. We do a lot of question marks about the Aurora Boreas in Northern Lights might be visible here tonight. It's not expected to be a wow event for us, but it's possible. Yeah, I wouldn't expect what we saw. This time last year we were able to see some beautiful purples and greens up higher above the horizon. Uh, this one is most likely gonna be along the horizon and I would look for a kind of a green hue. uh, now how much green we see and how intense it is, that's the the open question and the reason for that is, and this is what's kind of got me excited is there's a pair of what are called coronal mass ejections. Uh, I like to think of it as the sun is burping on us. It's this incredible release of energy and plasma and gas that's heading towards Earth. The challenge here is those two CMEs, we don't know when they're gonna arrive. We have an idea, but the, the forecasters out at the space weather prediction Center in Boulder, Colorado, which I got to spend some time with them a couple of weeks ago, fantastic group of people, they're 24/7 watching the sun for things like this, and more importantly for some things that space weather can impact here on Earth, radio communications, power grids, things like that. But they have some limited information to work with, so they're not entirely sure when those will arrive. If they arrive together, it could amplify the effects on them. might be seeing more of a green on the horizon, so time will tell. OK, and that's we were talking earlier, that's kind of what this line is here, um, that's when you can see it along the horizon. If you're at this area, it's more like up above. It was like a wow the beautiful pictures that you've seen, those are coming from these upper areas where it's more. Yeah, I wanna take a look at last year. So it was October of last year, so that the horizon line was way down here down in Florida all the way down to Florida, and we were in this area here and that's the day that we got those amazing uh photos from people. Some said they were able to see it with the naked eye, but most saw it with their camera. Tonight's, if it's visible, it's definitely not able to see with the naked eye. You're gonna be able to see this war with a with a camera and the way to do that. That is you, you get your camera, uh, in a position and cell phone cameras will work as well, where it's taking longer exposure. It's gathering more of that light, and that's how we take all those beautiful pictures. It's typically with longer exposures. The difference here in October was that that was a much stronger geomagnetic store. We measured them using a scale called KP. We're expecting about a 7.13 tonight, 7.33. This was on beyond 9. It was off the scale. That was a really unusual. uh, and, and what is actually happening is the, the stronger storms can push these particles down into the magnetosphere. Think of our magnetosphere like a donut, a Krispy Kreme doughnut surrounding, uh, uh, uh, the earth. As the particles come in, if they're connected and run along those field lines of the the magnetic field lines, if it's really strong, it can push farther south, farther south this way in towards the equator. That's what it takes to really see. The brilliant lights like we saw last year. OK, I do have like a little animation here that maybe you can explain. So the coronal mass rejection, the CME, that's what we're going to be watching today, and you said there's two of them. There's a pair of them, and you said that they, it wouldn't be like direct on, right? Yeah, all indications now are that these are going to take kind of glancing blows at the earth, one on one side, one on the other, but we're not. Entirely sure what direction they're heading. It's really limited the data that the folks have, these space weather forecasters. So if they're a little bit more directed to Earth, it could be a little bit stronger, but in all likelihood, they're gonna kind of take these glancing blows. Some of that energy is going to be caught up by the magnetosphere, and, uh, they're gonna get a nice show up north and maybe we'll get a little bit of green on our horizon. And you said we should get an update from Space Weather on, um, before our 10 o'clock news tonight. Yes. So we'll be sure to pass that along to Mike. He'll have that on our 10 o'clock news on Fox 50 tonight. So if you want to update, you can tune in to that. And if you do go outside, we want you to send us your photos. But again, it's not your thing, but we're, we're kind of fingers crossed it at least in the horizon, and we have to get away from city lights. That's always good. The darker the sky, the more you're gonna be able to see it. So keep in mind when we're talking about lights, that's to the north. So if you're In Raleigh, you're gonna be looking at Durham's lights. If you're in Durham, you get on the north side of Durham. It's a little more rural areas uh up up north of there, so you're gonna have a better view. OK, well, fingers crossed, it's always something that gets people talking and excited, so. Fingers crossed that we'll be able to see something tonight. Thanks for coming today. BACK PAIN. &gt;&gt; WE REMEMBER THIS LAST YEAR WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN OUR AREA. SO MANY PEOPLE GOT EXCITED ABOUT IT. THIS IS SOME OF THE VIDEO FROM LAST YEAR THAT PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO TAKE. I TELL YOU, I TRIED TO GO OUT AND SEE IT. I COULDN'T EVEN SEE IT ON MY PHONE. BUT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE THAT WERE ABLE TO SEE IT. AND NOW TODAY THERE'S THE POTENTIAL AGAIN, AT LEAST TONIGHT. SO JOINING ME IS TONY RICE HERE WHO'S AT NASA, AMBASSADOR TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR NEXT CHANCE TO SEE THE AURORA BOREALIS. SO A LOT OF BUZZ PEOPLE LOVE TO SEE IT. THE BRUNT OF IT IS WE DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY'RE GOING TO ARRIVE. ONE IS GOING VERY FAST. IT WAS GOING VERY SLOW AND TALKING WITH OUR FRONT OF THE SPACE WEATHER PREDICTION CENTER IN BOULDER. THEY'VE GOT SOME MODERATE CONFIDENCE ON EXACTLY WHEN IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN. WE ARE PRETTY SURE THAT IT IS GOING TO REACH EARTH AND AT LEAST UP IN THE UPPER PARTS OF THIS. &gt;&gt; OF THE COUNTRY. THEY'RE GONNA BE ABLE TO SEE SOME REALLY NICE VIEWS UP AND UP OVERHEAD. WE HAVE TO POSSIBLY MIGHT BE ABLE TO SEE SOME COLOR ON THE HORIZON. &gt;&gt; SO IT, OF COURSE, MOST OF THE TIME IS A WELL TO OUR NORTH. AND OF COURSE, THAT'S WHERE IT'S MORE LIKELY UP IN CANADA UP NEAR THE GREAT LAKES NEAR THE CANADIAN BORDER AND THEN POSSIBLY VISIBLE IS JUST THEY'RE SAFE FROM NEW YORK, WESTERN. AND WE'RE IN THE MAXIMUM VISIBILITY SCENARIO. BUT WHEN WE LOOK AT WHAT THE FORECAST WAS LAST YEAR, WHEN WE'RE ABLE TO SEE SO MUCH OF IT, WE'RE IN THE POSSIBLY VISIBLE AND THE MAXES ABILITY SCENARIO WAS WELL TO OUR SOUTH. SO AGAIN, IT DOESN'T IT DOESN'T LOOK AS LIKELY THIS TIME, BUT STILL WITH 2 OF THOSE COMING TOGETHER, IF THEY COME AT THE SAME TIME, DOES THAT GIVE US A BETTER CHANCE OR JUST ONE OF THEM NEEDS TO BE STRONG. THERE'S POSSIBLY THEY COULD COMBINE FORCES, IF YOU WILL. AND WHAT WE'RE SEEING IS CHARGED PARTICLES THAT ARE BEING INTRODUCED IN THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE. &gt;&gt; THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SEEING RIGHT HERE, THAT IT'S CALLED A CORONAL MASS EJECTION. IT'S THIS THE SUN BASICALLY BERKS AND SENDS OUT ALL OF THIS ENERGY OUR WAY. WE'VE GOT THIS GRAPHIC HERE AND YOU CAN SEE. SO THE ENERGY COMES OUT FROM THE SUN. &gt;&gt; AND IT HITS THE EARTH AND ALL THOSE ELECTRONIC PARTICLES HIT THE MAGNETIC FIELD AND THEN POTENTIALLY LIGHT HAPPENS. AND SO IT JUST DEPENDS ON IF IT'S STRONG ENOUGH TO MOVE ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE SOUTH. ABSOLUTELY. WE'RE KEEPING OUR EYE ON IT BECAUSE WE'LL KNOW ABOUT AN HOUR BEFOREHAND. WE DO WANT TO SHOW YOU THIS VIDEO FROM THE WRAL BREAKING NEWS TRACKER SHOWING THE MOMENTS THAT STATE HIGHWAY PATROL FOUND MAYO AND ARRESTED HIM BEFORE MIDNIGHT. HE'S AGAIN ACCUSED OF DRIVING THE FLATBED TRUCK THAT HIT A POWER LINE KILLED A LINE WORKER JAMES REDS SKI AND INJURED ANOTHER ONE. I'm meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. We saw a good soaking rain yesterday, anywhere from 0.5 inch to over 1 inch of rain. Well, the front that brought us that rain yesterday has stalled down in South Carolina and Georgia. It will gradually lift northward during the day today, so by mid-morning to mid to say middle of the afternoon, we're going to see some rain pushing back into our area. It's likely to come as far north as the triangle area, so we'll see that increase in the rain after the morning commute, and it moves. Out before the evening commute. You can see that window of opportunity there between say 10 and 2. That's when we get into around a 40% chance of rain. Because of the clouds that we're seeing, it is going to be a cool day for us today too. We're starting mid to upper 40s in the morning and expect highs only in the mid-50s. All of this moves out in time for the weekend. It still looks great. We'll see clearing skies on Saturday with mid 60s and sunshine with low to mid 70s on Sunday.

We could potentially see a heat advisory go in effect for Friday and for the weekend.

Showers and thunderstorms across our southern counties will continue to fizzle this morning. While today will be mostly dry ad hot, a quick shower or thunderstorm could develop by the afternoon. It's just a 20% chance for today.

The summer swelter is here for a while.  The heat index climbs to and above 105 this weekend.  That means we could go under a heat advisory. On TV this AM we will also show you when the best chance of storms will be this weekend.

We have a Level 1 risk for severe storms for Thursday evening for about half of the viewing area. Storms are expected to move into the western part of the viewing area in the evening. I'll highlight the new run of Futurecast at 11 PM on WRAL.
