A man who was involved in an shootout with police officers Thursday night has been charged in a deadly Garner shooting, according to officers.

Raleigh police said they were attempting to take Solomon Owens into custody around 7:10 p.m. Thursday on Wood Bend Drive near Van Thomas Drive when he shot at them.

Court documents show he shot at five officers, hitting one in the back of the head and shooting another officer's ballistic shield.

Owens is facing two felony-attempted first degree murder charges, five charges of felony-assault law enforcement officer/police officer with firearm and three charges of felony-assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill emergency workers.

Owens appeared in court on Friday with a bandage on the side of his face. Authorities will continue holding him under no bond. He is due in court again on March 12.

One officer and Owens were treated and released from the hospital. Police said Owens was taken into custody.

"I'm just glad the officers who are involved are okay and the suspect is in custody," said Raleigh Mayor Janet Cowell.

Police told WRAL News that Owens has been charged with murder in the death of Joey Adams, who was found shot in his car last week on Timber Drive in Garner.

A murder warrant shows Owens has a gang affiliation.

Investigators in Garner said they were expanding their investigation and created a tipline for more information on Adams' death earlier in the week.

"Our thoughts remain with Joseph Adams' family and loved ones, and we remain committed to seeking justice on their behalf," Garner Police Chief Chris Adams said.

It is unclear if Adams and Owens knew each other.

Boyce told reporters that he plans to release a report about Thursday's shooting, while the State Bureau of Investigation conducts an independent investigation.

Megan Crowley, a family friend of Adams, said she was "extremely grateful" for the efforts of police. Crowley first learned of Owens' involvement through WRAL's reporting.

"It won't fix what happened or bring Joey back, but I'm hoping this can help bring Joey's family closure and peace knowing this person won't be able to hurt anyone else," Crowley said.
