Backyard flock in Franklin County tests positive for bird flu

The state reports a case of bird flu has been discovered in Franklin County.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services said a 'backyard flock' tested positive for High Path Avian Influenza (HPAI) in a release distributed on Tuesday. The strain of virus is considered low-risk, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The virus is considered highly contagious to other birds.

A backyard flock generally refers to animals not intended for commercial use.

The development is the first confirmed positive case in Franklin County and the ninth confirmed positive case in North Carolina since Oct. 1, 2025.

“HPAI has been found in wild birds throughout the state so reports of positive backyard flocks will likely happen on occasion,” said state veterinarian Dr. Mike Martin. “I encourage our commercial and backyard flock owners to continue to follow strict biosecurity measures and if your flock is experiencing a sudden higher-than-normal mortality rate, report it right away to your local veterinarian or to the NCDA&CS’ Veterinary Division at 919-707-3250.”
