The FDA has recalled 12 different brands of cinnamon nationwide due to elevated levels of lead.
The FDA is advising consumers to throw these brands away and not to buy these ground cinnamon products going forward until further notice.

Though the FDA did not mention that these products were found in North Carolina, some are sold in stores familiar to the area like Dollar Tree. If you know anyone out-of-state that might come in contact with these brands, pass the warning along to them.
The recalled cinnamon brands are:
- Jiva Organics cinnamon, sold at Taj Supermarket (California)
- Super Brand cinnamon, sold at Asian Supermarket (Little Rock, Arkansas)
- Asli cinnamon, sold at A&Y Global Market (Columbia, Missouri)
- El Chilar cinnamon, sold at El Torito Market
- Marcum cinnamon, sold at Save-A-Lot Food Stores
- SWAD cinnamon, sold at Patel Brothers
- Supreme Tradition cinnamon, sold at Dollar Tree
- Compania Indillor Orientale cinnamon, sold at Eurogrocery
- ALB Flavor cinnamon, sold at Eurogrocery
- Shahzada cinnamon, sold at Premium Supermarket
- Spice Class cinnamon, sold at Fish World
- La Frontera cinnamon
These products have a long shelf life, so double check your cabinets and discard them immediately.
Based on the FDA’s assessment, consuming these products could contribute to elevated levels of lead in the blood.
Prolonged exposure could contribute to adverse health effects, especially for children. The FDA said that while this alert is not for foods targeted to children, cinnamon is used in many foods young children consume.
The FDA will continue to work with states to test cinnamon sold directly to consumers at retail and to test cinnamon at import.
