A new law preventing deed fraud is still being worked on but won't happen during this legislative session.
5 On Your Side has been tracking the progress of Senate Bill 423 for several months.

As currently written, the bill makes filing a fraudulent deed a Class H felony, it also sets verification requirements for people filing documents with a register of deeds and creates faster avenues to correct the record when a fraudulent document is filed.
The bill has had strong support in both the Senate and House but has been in committee for the last month.
5 On Your Side reached out to bill sponsor Sen. Benton Sawrey (R-Johnston) for an update on the legislation's progress.
Sawrey sent a statement saying:
"I think the Senate and the House are both committed to seeing SB 423 become law at some point during the biennium with guardrails on verification for filings and a quick way to address fraudulent documents. Real estate law and how we transfer property is complex in North Carolina and we want to make sure that this bill is comprehensive and works for property owners. If we're not careful, we could create some inefficiencies and needless cost. We want to make sure that this is a law that sticks, and we're not constantly tinkering with the process and creating more uncertainty."
