Mark Anthony Middleton, Mayor pro tempore for Durham who is in Washington, D.C. with Mayor Leonardo Williams for a Juneteenth celebration at the White House, provided WRAL News with the following statement on the shooting:

"I am sickened by the regularity of shootings in our city and angered by those who block us using every tool to combat this scourge. The heart of our city beats for that injured baby tonight and the mayor and I will not relent in bringing every tool and strategy that comports with our values to bear on this cancer eating away at our city."

Williams also provided WRAL News with a statement:

"As Mayor of one of the coolest cities in America, best places to live, best business establishments , etc, none of that matters until we make the safety of our communities, especially our children, the number one priority in this city. It won't happen until we treat our children with the same outrage we have over street safety, clear cutting trees and ceasefires in the Middle East. That starts with community members demanding accountability from themselves and all of their government bodies"

The shooting is under investigation. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Durham Police Department at 919-560-4440 ext. 29313 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200 or online.
