While no one was injured, many left their apartments and offices as police officers collected evidence at the scene. Jaxzon McLean said the situation was "alarming,"

"It really just needs to stop, especially when we have great areas like this that are up and coming," she said. "It makes it hard for all the residents that are living here too."

Josh Gagne, owner and operator of Haymaker on Fayetteville Street, said incidents like Wednesday have become a deterrent to those hoping to visit downtown Raleigh.

"I had people in there when they opened, then cops came in searching around, and the people turned around," he said. "I was like, 'Well, we're done for the day, because nobody wants to come have a drink when there's yellow tape anywhere."

It is not the first crime scene to pop up on Fayetteville Street in August. On Aug. 6, a man was shot just two blocks away from Wednesday's scene. Police later arrested the suspect involved with the shooting after he was stabbed hours later.

WRAL News looked at Raleigh police data for crimes reported in the 300 block of Fayetteville Street. This year, there have been 13 crimes along that stretch. The year 2015 was the peak with 41 crimes. The year 2021 was the lowest with nine.

Police said no one is in custody, adding the investigation is ongoing and more information would be released at the "appropriate time."

It was only the second scene in Raleigh that police swarmed to. Early Wednesday morning, a man was shot to death in his home on Carnage Drive. It is the 20th homicide in the city since the start of the year.
