Advocates say federal food aid cuts scheduled for 2026 will make NC's hunger problem worse
The tax and spending cut bill signed into law in July includes substantial cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which benefits 1.4 million low-income people in North Carolina. Republicans who supported the measure say the cuts will force states to root out waste, fraud and abuse of the aid program. Advocates say the cuts will only make an already dire hunger crisis worse.
