Schools across our area are experiencing issues with heat as temperatures fall into the 20s.

Some have canceled classes because of it, but others, like Wilson County, have kept students in school despite some classrooms being without heat.

According to the district, at least six schools in the county had problems just this week, and one is still experiencing issues with heat in some classrooms.

Misti Bohne is a mom of two Wilson County Public School students.

She reached out to WRAL News when her daughter came home from school not feeling quite right.

"I asked her, What's wrong with your face? It was chapped and pink," she said.

Bohne's daughter said her Elm City Middle School classroom was without heat all day on Monday and Tuesday.

She could never reach anyone when she called the school to ask why.

"I just wanted a simple explanation, and if you had somebody there working on it, if it didn't get fixed, what would be the next step?" she asked.

Wilson County Public Schools declined an interview but confirmed the issues, stating that all problems have been resolved except for issues in two classrooms at Stantonsburg Elementary.

A spokesperson said no students are in those classrooms for the time being.

Bohne said that even though the issues in her daughter's classroom have been resolved, she wishes she had been told about what was happening.

"I could have dressed her more appropriately. I could have layered her up, you know," she said.

WRAL News asked the district why parents weren't notified. In a statement, a spokesperson said the following.

"If a school were without heat and could not be repaired, parents would be informed."

Yet, Bohne still wishes it were handled differently.

"They never hesitate to call us on other issues. I don't understand why we weren't given the heads-up for this," she said.

A Wilson County Public Schools spokesperson said temporary heaters are used in some classrooms with ongoing heating issues.

We asked if any long-term fixes were in the works and are still awaiting a response.
