NC Estuarium Roving Riverboat - If you haven’t visited the NC Estuarium yet, (or even if you have), a spring trip is in order. This innovative environmental center is the world’s first Estuarium, celebrating the Pamlico-Albemarle estuary, where fresh and saltwater meet. The exhibits include aquariums with estuarine life, educational and art exhibits, interactive displays, and more. A roving riverboat tour can take you along the river, providing history of the most prominent port on the eastern seaboard in years past. There is a slight charge for admission to the exhibits. The river tours start in April. The riverboat ride is free, but reservations are required. Call for more information 252-948-0000, Tuesday-Saturday 10:30-3:30.
Riverfront Boardwalk - The waterfront parkway and boardwalk in Washington are situated right on the beautiful Pamlico River. This riverfront walkway is one that is truly unmatched anywhere else in the state. You can spy ducks swimming along, turtles peeking out from the water, and herons perched on wood and plants in the wetlands, virtually begging to be photographed. A great (free) activity for families, couples, or anyone who values nature and gorgeous views. Feel the breezes and get your steps in on this delightful promenade.
Goose Creek State Park - About 10 miles east of Washington you’ll find a natural haven that transports you to a serene world all its own. Hike the many trails throughout the park, bring a picnic and enjoy it at one of the dedicated areas, or just appreciate it at the water’s edge. (Dog are allowed in the park as long as they are leashed.) There is a river swim beach area where you can play in the water or float around while taking in the tranquil scene. Explore the nature center to find out what species you can see in the park. Make plans to camp in the primitive area, the RV section, or rent one of the tiny cabins on the grounds. Launch your kayak at Dinah’s Landing for a truly interactive experience.
Kayaking - Speaking of kayaking, there is no shortage of ways to get out on the water in Washington. Inner Banks Outfitters offers kayaks and stand up paddle boards. They are located at one of the public boat docks, and offer instruction if you’re a newbie. IBX Outfitters also has bicycle rentals and sales.
River Vibes is a place to go for kayak and paddle boat rentals. They’ll get you & your rental right down to the waterfront to get you out on the Pamlico River ASAP. They also offer bike rentals. (Be sure to check out the smoothie bar for refreshment after your adventure.)
Fishing - Whether you’re on a boat or at the water’s edge, there are many kinds of fish that can be caught in the Pamlico River. Speckled trout, red drum, and white perch are just a few. Be sure to check out Eastside Bait & Tackle and Warren’s Sporting Goods for your fishing permit and supplies. For you fly fishing needs, Captain Bo at Pirate Waters Outfitters can help.
- There are several fishing and boating charters in town as well. Fish IBX, Tar-Pam Guide Service, Foxy Lady Charters, and Across the Sound are all excellent choices.
Outside Dining - Most of the restaurants in Washington offer outside seating, many with water views. Enjoy a coffee, beer, glass of wine, or specialty cocktail while delighting in the gorgeous weather and quaint, village-like downtown. Washington also has a social district, so you can take your beverage with you within the marked perimeters while you sip and shop the unique shops and galleries.
However you decide to spend your spring in Washington, you’re sure to find an activity that has you excited, entertained, and wondering if you can extend your visit a bit longer.
