Is Justice blond or blind? Allison Quets Fund Blog

Apparently a GPS monitoring bracelet wasn't enough to keep another "dangerous" criminal off the streets. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael T. Sauer demanded she be picked back up as he did not believe home confinement was suitable punishment for her offences. The Sheriff's Office released her yesterday to serve the remainder of her sentence at home though the judge was adamant she should not receive preferential treatment.

Paris Hilton has been given a ride back to court in sheriffs deputies' custody for a hearing on her early release from jail. Hilton appeared to be promoting Rodan and Fields products while he later was found in handcuffs when she was placed into a black-and-white patrol car, which sped away from her home with lights flashing as news helicopters followed.

She has been ordered back to jail to serve out the remainder of her sentence.

In her decision to keep Allison Quets incarcerated for “abducting” her twins, the judge earlier this year made this statement concerning her decision to refuse bond.

“I don’t feel there’s anything I could do to fashion a set of conditions that she wouldn’t act against those impulses,” Judge Flanagan said.

Where is Bryan? by MCA
Thursday, June 05, 2007

In a Madeleine McCann’s, an infant taken from his mother by a knife wielding assailant, Bryan Dossantos-Gomes remains missing from Ft. Meyers, Florida.

There have been insinuations of human trafficking rings, ransom demands, frustration with how the case was handled and criticism of the parents. What is different is his parents, Maria Fatima Ramos dos Santos and husband Jurandir Gomes Costa, lack the resources and possible understanding to mount a campaign similar to the McCann’s. There is no website, no celebrities making pleas on their behalf or international interest. They are unable to garner the support to keep their son’s case in the media to the degree of the McCann’s. Once front page news in Florida, there are seldom any updates or progress reports.

They weren’t vacationing at a resort but living in the U.S. illegally searching for a better life. His disappearance became intertwined with the ongoing debate over illegal aliens. In some ways he became a victim of the immigration battles between the U.S. and Mexico though his parents are not Mexican citizens. The fact they are in the U.S. illegally makes some less caring, other less willing to come forward with information and may have hampered the efforts of authorities to find him.

When all is said and done, they have one common bond with the McCann’s, the longing for the safe return of their child. Full Article

The Case of Allison Quets by MCA
Thursday, May 24, 2007

Allison Quets is expected to return to court tomorrow but this time it is to continue her ongoing adoption battle to gain custody of her children. It is ironic in that it is also "National Missing Children’s Day". Last December she made news headlines when Kevin and Denise Needham notified authorities that the twins were “missing” after not being returned following a visit with their birth mother. They were later found at a Bed & Breakfast in Canada. At the time every detail of her life story was covered by various media outlets while the Needhams were able to retain privacy citing Florida adoption laws. However interest in other parental abductions warrants little if any interest by the press.

Earlier this month Billy Ray Whisnant Jr. abducted his Canadian child and headed for North Carolina where he was apprehended. He awaited extradition virtually undetected by either Canadian or North Carolina press.

Yesterday a mother who abducted her child in a custody dispute and eluded U.S. Marshals for 13 years before being arrested last year was aquitted.

Update 05-23-07

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The mother of a girl who authorities said was missing for 13 years was acquitted today of kidnapping

Meanwhile, Allison Quets, a mother indicted on charges of International Parental Kidnapping for taking her twins to Canada, who voluntarily waived extradition to return to North Carolina remains in jail. She was the subject of much media scrutiny including Nancy Grace and other national media.

Effecting change Allison's Blog
Monday, May 21, 2007

In an editorial comment in the Florida Times Union this past weekend, State Attorney Harry Shorstein expressed his frustration with the reporting of Florida Uniform Crime Report statistics.

While so many have encouraged me to not speak out or to agree with statistics or representation that tend to be more benign, we will never effect change without truly understanding the problem.

I circulated my "tale of two cities" speech, recently given to the Downtown Rotary, and urged critical review. No one questioned its substance, though most do not want to analyze and discuss what we should do.

He is the Uncle of Michael Shorstein, a member of the American Academy Of Adoption Attorneys, who was a subject of this blog post on Sunday, December 31, 2006. Who kidnapped whom first?

There was also this terse reply allegedly written by his partner to a blog post about the Shornstein family in July of last year.

There are those that wish the State of Florida would be as open about adoptions. Mr. Shorstein once made this comment to Larry King in January of 2005 while discussing another Jacksonville adoption case prompting questions if he had any sympathy for parents.

I think what's most important is people have to understand that the biological parents have the fundamental right for the care, control and custody of their children, and I think that's what's being overlooked here.

Apparently the Shorsteins aren't the only ones frustrated.

Perhaps his Uncle Harry is correct, "...we will never effect change without truly understanding the problem". Full Article

Request for support Allison Quets Blog
Friday, May 18, 2007

A request for signatures for an Allison Quets and Catherine Ristow petition was made earlier this month on the Dr. Phil message board Topic : 04/12 Twin Tug of War.

From: DrPhil.com

Quote From: c_hannasch

What kind of a system takes a mother and punishes her for being sick and needing some help.

It is exactly this question which has plagued me since I first encountered the case of Allison Quets last summer.

Another is why in the world her arraignment, the first step in the legal process she must go through,is not even scheduled to take place until October of this year?

And... a similar case involving a woman named Catherine Ristow, who filed a complaint with the State Bar of Florida, won a professional reprimand issued by the Supreme Court of Florida against an attorney, with no change whatsoever in even the visitation for her daughter.

What is going here?

I am not a conspiracy-minded person, but am wondering why.

For that reason, I have put together an online petition to go back to the beginning of this case and request Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum, and Ronda Storms, the chair of the Florida state Senate Committee on Chldren, Families and Elder Affairs asking for an investigation into both cases to determine if there have been any violations of Florida state law or of professional standards expected of attorneys and other professionals licensed by the State of Florida involved in adoption in these two cases.

Elected officials have the duty, the responsibility to faithfully uphold and executive the law. Simply ignoring the law by elected public officials should not beallowed, for it will only lead to more and more abuse and violations of the law.

I am encouraging all registered voters in the State of Florida to sign this petition, it is only asking for an invesitgation by the Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution, nothing else, nothing more, but the people do have the right to know what happened in Florida which may have precipitated the tragic scenario of Allison Quets.

The petition is available online at Invrprts , and is simply titled "Investigation by Florida Office of Statewide Prosecution."

It is the public's right to know if in fact there may have been any violations of Florida state statutes. Full Article

Canadian or Carolina justice?
May 3rd, 2007 by MCA

Earlier this year Allison Quets was returned to the U.S. from Canada after allegedly abducting her birth twins. She remains in jail awaiting trial. So what happens when someone abducts their child in Canada and heads to North Carolina?

The Charlotte Observer reported this story yesterday. It will be interesting to see if he too will be charged with International Kidnapping and be denied bail. He has been able to allude authorities since April 23rd.

A 36-year-old Claremont man has been charged by U.S. and Canadian officials with the abduction of his 4-month-old daughter, who like her mother is a Canadian citizen, the U.S. Marshals Service announced today. Billy Ray Whisnant Jr. surrendered to marshals in Charlotte this morning and is being held pending an extradition hearing, said Steve Gladden, spokesman for the Marshals Service Charlotte office.

The Hickory Daily Record conducted a check for prior criminal acts.

An N.C. Department of Corrections reveals a history of convictions for Whisnant, including assault on a female, larceny, felony breaking and entering to vehicles and resisting an officer.

A detention hearing for Whisnant is set for Friday in U.S. District Court in Charlotte.

If the U.S. District Court remain consistent, you wouldn’t think he should be expected to be out anytime soon. His story has yet to be covered as extensively as that of Ms. Quets as a quick Google search on his name “Billy Ray Whisnant Jr.” produces 2 results while “allison quets” will return 932 at last count.

Quets suit will stay sealed

John Drescher, managing editor of The News & Observer, said the paper is considering whether to appeal the decision to the Florida Supreme Court.

Staff writer Todd Silberman can be reached at 829-4531 or todd.silberman@newsobserver.com.

  • Contact the News & Observer, and tell them that you support them in appealing the decision to make the lawsuit public.
  • Tell Michael Shorstein & Brian Kelly that this is a violation of Allison's civil rights to close the lawsuit. If the only people who can access or have information on the case is Shorstein and Kelly who finalized the adoption, then there is a direct conflict of interest, not just for Allison, but for all mothers who were coerced and are contesting in the state of Florida or considering filling a lawsuit against an adoption lawyer or adoption agency.
